Family Prayers...at OUR house

At our house, mom or dad usually says family prayer in the evening, and then we go in individually while the children say their personal prayers at bed. We figure that we can spare Heavenly Father from 1 more request for all the Star Wars action figures ever made with accompanying ships, no more peas ever, and ice cream for dinner.
My children, Mackey in particular, has asked on numerous occasions why our family prayers 'take so long'. Well, today's activites must have put him over the edge because right before bed, Mackey says to me: "Can you not say all the stuff in your heart tonight? We gotta go to bed!" Oh! He's a funny kid! (Pic: I'm not sure if that's a flamenco move or what.) Any funny family prayer stories? Bedtime stories to share?

I can remember that my dad would always say the L-O-N-G-E-S-T prayers on fast Sundays before we were allowed to eat. When my brother was little, he used to start kicking the floor, sighing really loudly, and saying Amen in an attempt to help my Dad wrap things up. Andrew always wants to say what he refers to as his 'friend prayer' it involves the same phrases like, "we're grateful for this day. Me and Bracken played so much today on the slide. Jonah, Johnny, and Zach Burns are also my friends' and he will say this whether or not he has seen any of these kids recently. He does not like to bless the food in these prayers, even though we are all sitting at the table and have asked him to bless the food. If we ever fold our arms, whether or not it is for a prayer, Zack will immediately fold his arms and bow his head. Sometimes he will just take it upon himself to pray, which is very cute and he has the greatest inflection while he prays, he is a good mimic. Even if he isn't saying words we can understand, he at least will speak with the usual prayer rhythm and inflection.

Of course, there was another time when Ben decided he would make us dinner. Usually he is a great cook, but this night he decided to go wild with spices. When I say wild with spices, I mean he used EVERY spice we own. It smelled like we were having potluck with about six different ethnicities. It was not a pleasant smell. I just remember that when he blessed the food to nourish and strengthen us, we both just burst out laughing because it was such a futile statement with the mess he had concocted. We chucked the food (much better than UPchucking the food), sprayed some air freshners, lit some candles, ordered a pizza, and learned the importance of moderation in seasoning.

Maybe someday another person who looks at this blog will leave another prayer story, but until that happens...

So, tonight during dinner as we all had our arms folded and eyes shut, Zack kept saying "WAKE UP! WAKE UP!" However, he did say Amen at the end.
